CleanPlate Nutrition and Therapy Project

Clean Plate Nutrition and Therapy Project

The idea for the CleanPlate Nutrition and Therapy Project began during visits to children’s homes, where we would donate foodstuffs, mentor the children, and spend time playing and engaging with them. During these visits, we noticed striking differences in some of the children—their behaviors, responses, and social cues. Some showed little interest in interaction, others struggled with coordination, drooled, or even reacted aggressively, and many displayed developmental delays such as limited speech or difficulty maintaining attention.

As we listened and learned, we discovered that many of these children were living with silent disabilities—conditions like autism, sensory processing disorders, or developmental delays that often go unnoticed or undiagnosed. Yet in informal settlements, therapy services are far out of reach—not only because the cost is well beyond what most families can afford, but also due to stigma and lack of awareness that discourage families from seeking help.

Nutrition is another critical challenge. Many families survive on less than a dollar a day, making it impossible to provide the balanced meals children need for healthy growth and development.

From this realization, CleanPlate was born: a program that provides nutritious meals, targeted therapies, and holistic care. Every service is offered at no cost to the children or their families, ensuring that every child, regardless of ability or diagnosis, has the chance to grow, connect, and thrive.

Nutrition That Complements Care

  • In communities like Mathare, therapy alone isn’t enough. Many of the children we serve come from families facing daily food insecurity. And it’s hard to stretch, speak, or focus when your body is running on empty.

That’s why, alongside our therapy sessions, we provide monthly food packages to families enrolled in the Clean Plate Nutrition & Therapy Project.

These packages do more than fill bellies — they:

    •  Support developmental progress by fueling growing bodies
    •  Boost therapy outcomes with better energy and concentration
    •  Ease caregiver stress, allowing parents to focus on healing instead of surviving

It’s simple: when a child is well-fed, they thrive — inside and outside the therapy room.

The Impact

  • Since 2017, our Saturday sessions have become a lifeline in Mathare:
a place for healing, learning, nourishment, and belonging.

    What We’ve Achieved:

    • 2,500+ therapy sessions delivered (Occupational, Speech, Physical, and Behavioral)
    • 400+ children supported, many attending therapy for the first time in their lives
    • 10,800+ quarterly food packages distributed to families facing chronic food insecurity
    • 120+ families consistently cared for through therapy and nutrition
    • 70% improvement in therapy attendance when food support is included
    • 100% of caregivers report improved confidence, hope, and reduced emotional stress

This is more than a project. It’s a community — one where every child is supported to grow, every caregiver is uplifted, and no one is left behind simply because they were born different.

Real Stories, Real Progress

Before therapy, my son Nelson couldn’t even hold a cup. Now he drinks on his own and smiles while doing it ,that joy means everything to me.

The therapists treat us like family, and once in a while when donations come in, we receive a food parcel that really helps at home.

Thanks to the Clean Plate Nutrition and Therapy Project, my son is growing stronger, and our family finally has hope.
